What does US Congressional Efforts to Ban TikTok mean for Palestinian Digital Rights

7amleh - The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media introduces a new semi-regular webinar series: Palestinian Digital Rights Study Group! In the first iteration of the new series, join us for a discussion about recent congressional efforts to ban TikTok or force the sale to non-Chinese ownership. 7amleh will convene Palestinian and Digital Rights advocates to discuss potential ramifications for this action, what this means for freedom of expression and social media broadly, and help us understand TikTok’s role during this time of global solidarity for Palestinian rights.

Speaker bio:

- Nadim Nashif is an advocate for digital rights and a social entrepreneur. He serves as the founder and General Director of 7amleh – The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, an organization dedicated to promoting digital rights for Palestinians . Additionally, Nadim is a policy analyst for Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network, co-founded Untold Palestine and over the last two decades, he has been actively engaged in addressing community development concerns, both locally and globally.

- Abed A. Ayoub serves as the National Executive Director of the American-Arab Anti- Discrimination Committee (ADC), the country’s largest Arab American civil rights organization. Throughout his career Ayoub has worked to address issues impacting Arabs and Muslims in the United States, including matters related to discrimination, immigration, hate crimes, surveillance and profiling. Under his leadership the ADC Legal Department has successfully assisted and provide support to impacted community members across the country. Ayoub also works to enhance the community’s economic empowerment, and access to education. Ayoub is a native of Dearborn, Michigan, which is home to the largest concentration of Arab Americans. Outside of his professional capacity Ayoub works to tackle the issue of hunger and homelessness in the Metro Detroit and Washington, D.C. Areas. He is co-founder of Third Pillar Charities, which provides relief and opportunity for the less fortunate.

- Evan Greer is a queer trans activist and writer who has been on the front lines of some of the highest profile grassroots victories of the last decade with Fight for the Future. Evan develops strategy and messaging to inform all Fight’s campaigns, interfaces with legislators and press, and steers crisis response. She is a leading expert on the intersection of LGBTQ rights issues and tech policy, particularly concerning content regulation, data privacy, commercial surveillance, and algorithmic harms, and sits on GLAAD’s Social Media Safety Index advisory board. Evan’s op-eds and adept framing of the issues are regular features in numerous publications, including The Guardian, Newsweek, CNN, Newsweek, and Time. Called “a heck of a guitarist” by Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, she is also a professional musician and continues to create music, tour and organize live music events.
