Event: Palestinian Digital Rights, Genocide and Big Tech Accountability
Moderated by Makan and anchored in 7amleh's and Amnesty Tech's critical work, this event will centre the necessity for organisers and human rights defenders to become educated on their digital rights one year into Israel’s genocide in Gaza and ongoing apartheid regime. Providing both legal and research based expertise, speakers will unpack how Israel violates digital rights, with the complicity of big tech corporations such as META and Instagram, to spy on and punish human rights defenders globally, and will speak to advocacy and policy efforts offer practical steps on what activists can do to protect themselves and their advocacy efforts across digital platforms.

Nadim Nashif
Nadim is an advocate for digital rights and a social entrepreneur. He serves as the founder and Executive Director of 7amleh – The Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media, an organization dedicated to promoting digital rights for Palestinians. Additionally, Nadim is an Advisory Board member for the Digital Democracy Initiative (DDI). He is also a member of the Golabe Reference Group of Deutsche Welle Akademie, a policy analyst for Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network, and a co-founder of Untold Palestine.he has been actively engaged in addressing community development and human rights concerns, both locally and globally.
Matt Mahmoudi
Matt is a lecturer, researcher, and organizer. He was the lead researcher on Amnesty International's ‘Automated Apartheid’ report, investigating how facial recognition deployments in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are further reinforcing apartheid. He’s been leading the ‘Ban the Scan’ campaign, Amnesty International’s research and advocacy efforts on banning remote biometric surveillance,. Matt is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge, with publications including the edited book ‘Resisting Borders and Technologies of Violence’ (Haymarket Books), and his forthcoming book ‘Migrants in the Digital Periphery’ (University of California Press)

Aimee Shalan
Aimee Shalan is director of Makan, a Palestinian-led organisation dedicated to intersectional learning, that uses transformative education to strengthen the movement for Palestinian liberation. She is also Chair of the British Palestinian Committee, a policy member of the Palestinian policy network, Al Shabaka and a Trustee of Friends of Birzeit University. She was previously Chief Executive of Medical Aid for Palestinians and holds a doctorate in the politics of Palestinian literature.
