Reconnecting Gaza, Empowering the Future
The genocidal war on Gaza has resulted in catastrophic and deliberate destruction of the area’s telecommunications infrastructure, leaving Gaza largely disconnected and isolated from the world. Although a ceasefire was declared on January 19, the humanitarian crisis remains severe, with telecommunications blackouts continuing to impact every aspect of life in Gaza. This disconnection has disrupted access to vital information, stifled freedom of expression, and hindered emergency response and humanitarian efforts. The situation is not just a technical issue; it represents a profound violation of human rights, directly impacting the right to access information and the freedom to communicate.
Throughout Gaza, particularly in the northern regions, families trapped under rubble died because they were unable to call for help. Without a signal, cries for rescue went unheard, and lives were lost in silence. These tragedies serve as grim reminder that connectivity is not luxury - it is a matter of life and death. The lack of a functioning telecommunications system means Gaza’s residents are not only cut off from the world but are also denied access to essential services, economic opportunities, and the ability to rebuild their lives.
The restoration of telecommunications in Gaza is not only an urgent humanitarian need but also a fundamental pillar for Gaza’s future. Beyond responding to immediate needs, we advocate for the realization of a Palestinian ICT sector’s independence from Israeli control, ensuring a sector that is advanced, equitable, and accessible to all. Ending the deliberate isolation of the Palestinian people is critical to protecting fundamental human rights.
At a time when U.S. President Donald Trump has openly suggested that Gaza should be emptied of its Palestinian residents, we reject any and all attempts to permanently remove Palestinians from their homeland. Gaza belongs to its people, and the world must act now to rebuild and reconnect it—ensuring a future where Palestinians remain, recover, and thrive.
